Kalon – Escuela de Surf
Kalon Surf is located in beautiful Dominical Costa Rica. Kalon which stands for profound beauty is just that. Owned and operated by Netherlands native Kjeld Schight, this eco friendly luxury surf camp is in a class of its own. The resort is located about 2-1/2 hours from San Jose and when you land, Kalon will be waiting for you. From the moment you book your trip, Kjeld and his staff are in keeping you informed on what’s in store for you before you arrive. They will let you know how the waves and weather are as well as make sure you know what to pack.
This boutique resort accommodates up to 8 people and the surf coach / student ratio is at most 3:1 You will feel like you are staying at a friend’s house. That’s the vibe that Kjeld has created. There are amazing ocean views, beautiful decks, gourmet open kitchen and a Jacuzzi. They are also part of the 1% For The Planet Organization that really helps the world be a better place.
The surf coaches at Kalon are all certified in lifeguard training and by the ISA or BSA for surf lessons.
The instructors are just as excited to teach as you are to surf. They have different levels of coaching based on your ability and they will definitely take you to next level. The categories are classified as:
Boardriders
Cruisers
Carvers
Charges
You will also have daily video taken of your surf sessions and the coaches will review the footage with you so you can see firsthand how you are doing out there in the lineup.
Each morning during your stay (Saturday to Saturday) Kjeld will make the call on where you are going to be surfing that day. Kalon is located within all the many surf breaks each one a little different depending on the swell.
You day starts off with a healthy breakfast using local ingredients from their amazing chef Pablo.
Once you head out the beach to surf, the Kalon staff will have fresh fruit, water, snacks and lunch for you during the day. The surfboards you will use during your stay are from Santa Cruz. These high quality boards will really help you with your surfing. You will also be using the eco friendly Matunas surf wax. These guys don’t miss a beat.
The surf coaching you will get is much more that just getting pushed into waves. The coaches will be guide you into understanding what you need to do in relation to the waves, wind, swell direction and positioning.
After your day of surfing, you will stop at a local waterfall then you will have some time to relax at the resort lounge area or in your room equipped with a TV and of course WiFi).
For dinner the chef will prepare a 3 course high end meal for you and your group to enjoy.
During the week you will have one day off. This is your day to either chill, go fishing or get a massage. All part of your package.
Upon leaving Kalon, they will give you a USB stick with pictures from your week to take home with you.
They will also share the pics and videos on facebook too.
After you get home, you will continue to be part of the Kalon family. Any questions you have on surfing, equipment, etc… just give them a call or email. They will be a great resource for you as you are now a “Surfer”.
