Workout like a Surfer – SurfSet Fitness
We all want to have the body of a surfer but unless you surf everyday, you won’t quite get there. Until now, thanks to SurfSet Fitness. This surf inspired workout using their Rip Surfer X machine will take your fitness level and surf ability to new heights.
The Rip Surfer X is a surfboard deck set on top of round disks (like mini bosu balls) and attached to 2 cables to simulate paddling. They have had great success with pop up classes all over the states and I caught up with one of the founders Mike Hartwick in NYC and got some insight on what Surf Set Fitness is all about. There was a lot of thought that went into the class structure and the Rip Surfer X design. This class is designed by surfers for both surfers and non surfers. It is an all body workout that mixes, strength, agility and cardio.
I took a class recently in NYC. Taught by the SurfSet program designer Sarah, this 45 minute high intensity workout was amazing. It was a challenge at first getting used to my balance point but once you started grooving with the music and my heart started pumping, like me you will feel like you just paddled into a set wave. We did a series of pop ups, into squats, into side lunges, duck dives and resistance paddling. It was awesome to get the cardio in by doing land exercises around a sport i love.
Whenever I go to the gym I gear my workouts towards surf specific exercises. I will work on my pop up and do shoulder exercises. Now after the Surfset class I took, I look forward to the Rip Surfer X getting into gyms which is one of Mike goals for the immediate future.
But in the meantime get ready for some indoor winter surf sessions. They are currently holding classes at Chelsea Piers in NYC.
